Loughareema near Ballycastle is one of the most interesting lakes in Northern Ireland, simply for the fact that it disappears from time to time. The lake actually drains itself out into a leaky chalk-bed, through a ‘chalk ‘plug hole’. The hole gets filled up with peat causing the lake to fill with water, then it randomly clears and the water in the lake drains underground at a rapid rate, so the lake vanishes. The process then starts again Ref : land 1034
